Job Description

Responsibilities:

As per instruction from the Visitor Centre Services Coordinator/Site Manager, and in accordance with agreed priorities, a Café Supervisor should expect to be involved in/responsible for the following activities:

  1. Oversees the establishment (Café) in its daily operations
  2. Ensures a high level of hygiene is maintained at all times
  3. Ensures that all sales transactions correlate with monies collected at closure of sales. Report any discrepancies to the VSSM/SM
  4. Trains and assigns duties and evaluates the performance of café attendants (sales Clerks)
  5. Responsible for the financial side of the café, oversee the daily cash transactions and also maintain proper stock records
  6. Make sure all equipment is functioning properly and report of any breakage and malfunctioning
  7. Promote the café by increasing a variety and quality of local supplies available for visitors to buy
  8. In liaison with the Visitor Centre Services Coordinator, manage the daily float and assist with reconciliation of monies received at the close of each day
  9. Note: Café Supervisor must use the canteen facilities while having tea  or lunch
  10. Oversees supervision of the shop in the absence of the Shop Supervisor

 Customer care

  1. Greet clients in a positive manner when selling tickets and/or recording entrance to the forest
  2. Provide all independent tourist with a short, welcome and briefing about the forest, the rules and regulations, and SIF’s role in conservation of both VdM and Aldabra Atoll
  3. Ensure that you are familiar with the contents of the VdM leaflet and any pertinent information which should be relayed to tourist, including liaising with the Park Rangers in relation to current and ongoing research
  4. Respond positively and appropriately to visitor queries and/or pass them on to the appropriate member of staff and/or the Centre Supervisor
  5. Listen for visitor feedback and ensure that relevant information is passed to the Visitor Services and Sales Officer and the Site Manager
  6. Ensure you know where the First Aid Kit is, and call for assistance in instances of any injury

Reporting

    1. Maintain the diary of daily events and activities to report to the Visitor’s Management Supervisor/Site Manager
    2. Assist the Visitor Services and Sales Officer as appropriate with the collation of recording, input and collation of data relating to tourist numbers, Tour Operator groups, ticketing etc

Ad hoc assistance

As necessary, and upon direction of the Visitor Centre Services Coordinator, Café Supervisor should be prepared to assist with work in other Sections of the Visitor Centre.

  1. Luggage handling. Assist the luggage handling staff and/or take responsibility for the luggage handling area when directed to do so.  Ensure that visitor belongings are carefully received and stored in locked lockers, with the keys stowed safely in the cabinet and the tourists given a ‘card’ with which they can reclaim their belongings.  Similarly, return belongings to the visitors upon receipt of the appropriate locker ‘card’.
  2. Souvenir shop. Assist in the souvenir shop as appropriate and when directed to do so.  This will involve working on the ‘shop floor’, assisting shop staff with maintaining the displays in good order, keeping the shop clean and tidy, promoting shop goods to customers and generally assisting with customer queries and helping to ensure a positive and efficient service.  In some instances, it may also involve assistance with sale of goods and/or packing items after sale
  3. Monitoring park entry. Assist at the entrance to the forest, check that each entrant has a valid ticket.  This involves oversee and report on the entry of residents and GOP-holders.  Ensure that no cigarettes are taken into the forest at all times.  Record the number of independent tourists entering and leaving the forest, time, and ticket numbers as well as any other pertinent information as requested by the Centre Supervisor.  Also collect all tickets from Tour Operators and/or Cruise Ship Operators, by ensuring that the number of tickets received tallies with the number of tourists entering the forest.  Record all ticket numbers, the Tour Operator, the name of the guide and time of entry and as well note the time of exit of Tour Operator and/or Cruise Ship groups
  4. Exhibit area. Assist with maintaining the exhibit areas and their contents

Café Supervisor should also be prepared to assist with any duties assigned by the Visitor Centre Services Coordinator and/or the Site Manager

Location – Vallee de Mai, Praslin

Responsible to – Visitor’s Centre Service Coordinator

Hours or Work – 45 Hours per week (Shift)

Job Requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Post-secondary school graduate or Front Office training (STA) including 1 year supervisory skill or on job training
  • At least 3 years working experience in sales and/or marketing or similar position is an advantage
