About the Role

The Island Conservation Society is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Conservation Officer to join our team. The applicant will be responsible for management of the Conservation Centre on the Atoll or Islands including supervision and training of ICS Staff and implementation of the conservation management plan. The Officer will have to implement programmes for biodiversity, monitoring, conservation and rehabilitation for the terrestrial and associated marine ecosystems of the Islands and educate visitors and residents as to their value and to protect these ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Planning & Invasive Species Management – Assist in the revision and implementation of the Islands’ Conservation Management Plan including developing a rehabilitation programme, eradication or control of introduced fauna and flora and possible introduction of native Seychelles fauna.
• Scientific Monitoring & Conservation Operations – Establish a biodiversity monitoring programme for terrestrial and marine ecosystems in consultation with and as directed by the Supervisor.
• Team Leadership & Station Management – Co-ordinate the day-to-day work for the Assistant Conservation Officer and Conservation Rangers and provide ongoing field training, technical mentorship, and performance evaluation for team members.
• Stakeholders and Guest Engagement – Develop a professional working relationship with staff of the Islands Development Company (IDC) and approved tourism investors on the Islands, such as Island Lodge, Blue Safari Seychelles and others and oversee the organisation of the tours on the island and talks for guests in consultation with the hotel Ecology and Sustainability Manager and Guest Relations Manager.
• Financial & Administrative Management – Handle the Conservation Centre’s administration, including receipts and payments for sale of ICS materials and submit monthly reports to Head Office and contribute to the production of an annual budget.

Key Requirements & Qualifications

• Education – University undergraduate degree in the biological, conservation or environmental sciences or Postgraduate degree in conservation management, specialised or closely related fields of study.
• Experience – Boat handling/skippering experience and current first aid certification and water scuba diver
• Competencies – Strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
• Personal Attributes – Physically and mentally resilient to cope with remote locations, good awareness of safety issues, and comfortable living and working in a small team with diverse cultures.
