Job Description
For more than 20 years, Fregate Island has been a leader in conservation and sustainable island management. As a Conservation & Sustainability Officer, you will support daily fieldwork, monitoring, data management, and sustainability initiatives across the island. This is a practical, field-based role suited to motivated individuals who enjoy working outdoors and collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
The work is highly hands-on and varied. One day may involve seabird monitoring or habitat restoration, another marine surveys or coral restoration, and another supporting sustainability projects or guiding guests on nature walks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with land and seabird monitoring, including censuses, ringing support, and habitat mapping
- Monitor reptiles and other wildlife, including tortoises, terrapins, sea turtles, snakes, and lizards
- Support habitat restoration, vegetation work, tree nursery activities, and biosecurity checks
- Participate in marine conservation activities such as coral restoration, reef surveys, and species monitoring
- Contribute to sustainability initiatives, including waste management support and island clean-ups
- Guide nature walks and share conservation knowledge with guests when required
- Carry out data entry, basic analysis, and preparation of internal reports
- Ensure conservation equipment is well maintained and departmental protocols are followed
Benefits
- Duration: 1 year
- Type: Paid position
- Salary: SCR 10’647.00 per month
- Working Hours: 7:30am – 4:30pm (incl. 1-hour lunch break)
- Six (6) days off per month minutes, 1.75 leave days per completed month of service
- Shared accommodation and three daily meals provided, plus uniform
Job Requirement
- BSc in Natural Sciences or Environmental Management
- Experience in conservation, ecological monitoring, or field research
- PADI Open Water certification with a minimum of 10 logged dives
- Experience working in remote locations
- Data skills: Excel essential, R, QGIS, and CyberTracker an advantage
- Strong communication skills and ability to work responsibly with minimal supervision
- Good command of English; additional language an advantage
- Ability to work outdoors in demanding conditions and as part of a small team
