Job Description
Responsible to: Chief Executive Officer
Job Summary:
The Public Relations and Communications Officer will play a key role in managing and executing public relations strategies across various platforms, including social media, websites, and other digital media. This role involves working closely with other departments, as well as collaborating with the press, civil society organizations, schools, international bodies, and government entities, to implement outreach and promotional activities. The officer will ensure effective communication, networking, and liaison with both national and international organizations. They will also provide support to enhance understanding of human rights and promote the Commission’s mandate. Additionally, the officer will manage SHRC’s documented information and collaborate across various teams and sections as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities                                                   Â
- Develop, manage and implement the SHRC’s Public Relations Strategy.
- Design and manage social media campaigns aligned with the Commission’s PR objectives and create relevant social media and press kits.
- Provide public relations support for all Commission activities.
- Devise strategies to uphold and enhance the public image of the Commission.
- Maintain communication and collaborate with local and international partners, including other National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), civil society organisations, Ministries, Departments, Agencies, media houses, and other external stakeholders, to promote human rights and facilitate effective networking.
- Prepare and disseminate publicity materials such as press releases, articles, leaflets, newsletters, brochures, website content, and promotional videos to inform the public about the SHRC’s work.
- Assist in preparation and delivery of educational outreach campaigns.
- Collaborate with other units to coordinate digital public relations content and marketing for outreach campaigns and promotional events.
- Capture photos of Commission events and related activities as required.
- Assist with the preparation of presentations and speeches in collaboration with SHRC staff and Commissioners.
- Prepare the Unit’s biannual and annual reports in collaboration with the SHRC team.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the CEO and Commissioners.

Job Requirements
Minimum Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Law, Journalism, or equivalent, with a minimum of two years’ experience in a Public Relations or Communications role;
OR - Diploma in Public Relations, Communications, Law, or equivalent, with four years of relevant work experience;
OR - Significant relevant work experience in Public Relations, Communications, or Journalism.
Key Skills Required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
- Ability to apply diplomatic approaches to communication.
- Experience managing organisational social media accounts.
- Familiarity with web management, video editing, and content management systems (CMS) is an added advantage.
- Creative thinking, research, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, or similar media editing software is an added advantage.
- Familiarity with Human Rights Principles is an added advantage.
