Senior Legal Counsel
Job Description
We are seeking to recruit an Attorney-at-Law or LLB graduate who has performed in a senior position with experience in legal research & drafting legislation or/and experience of assisting a Parliamentary/Legislative Body with the passage of legislation. The Senior Legal Counsel will be required to conduct comprehensive legal research, draft legislation and provide essential support to the Director of the Commission in the areas of law reform, law revision, post-legislative scrutiny and legal research.
Job Purpose
The Senior Legal Counsel of the Seychelles Law Commission will provide essential support to the Director of the Seychelles Law Commission in the discharge of the Law Commission duties under the Law Commission Act, 2022.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist the Director in the performance of the Director’s functions specified in the Law Commission Act, 2022.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research, draft legislation specified in the annual work plan approved by the President and the Cabinet pursuant to section 22 of the Law Commission Act.
- Facilitate public consultation on draft legislation.
- Prepare Reports, documents and other materials for the use of the Commission and the public.
- Liaise with other departments, ministries and the National Assembly to identify Law reform and review needs.
- Consult the President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Justice and Chief Magistrate periodically on any concerns about any statute that has arisen in any judicial decision pursuant to section 21(2)(e) of the Law Commission Act.
- Provide support during the consolidation and revision of the laws of Seychelles.
- Assist in the management of the Laws of Seychelles Website, the Seychelles Law Commission Website, and the Seychelles Law Commission social media platforms.
- Assist in the electronic storage and management of the laws of Seychelles and judicial decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
- Prepare the annual reports of the Commission.
- Participate or assist in training workshops and seminars and attend relevant workshops.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Director.
Benefits
Salary: An attractive salary package will be offered to the successful candidate in the salary range of Band 9 Step 14 of the Public Service Salary Table 2025.
