Job Description
Job Summary:
The Principal Health and Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of workplace health, safety, and environmental programs. The role ensures compliance with local, state, and national regulations, as well as promoting a culture of safety and risk management across the organization. The Principal Health and Safety Officer provides leadership and guidance to staff on safety policies and procedures, conducts audits, and implements training to minimize risks and promote a safe working environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Health and Safety Program Management
- Develop, implement, and update comprehensive health, safety, and environmental programs.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Decree).
- Conduct risk assessments and ensure safe systems of work are in place across all departments.
- Collaborate with management to develop safety KPIs and monitor progress toward achieving them.
- Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation
- Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement measures to mitigate them.
- Lead investigations into health and safety incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring that root causes are identified and corrective actions are taken.
- Maintain accurate records of all incidents and accidents and produce detailed reports.
- Health and Safety Training
- Design and deliver health and safety training programs for employees, managers, and supervisors.
- Ensure that all staff receive the appropriate health and safety training as required by their role.
- Maintain training records and ensure they are up-to-date and compliant with regulations.
- Compliance and Auditing
- Conduct regular internal health and safety audits to ensure compliance with organizational policies and external regulations.
- Work with regulatory bodies and third-party auditors to ensure compliance and certification in health and safety practices.
- Manage and prepare for external inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
- Safety Culture and Communication
- Promote a positive safety culture throughout the organization by leading initiatives and campaigns.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, providing expert advice and guidance to employees and management.
- Lead regular safety meetings, communicate updates on safety policies, and distribute safety reports.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various potential workplace hazards (e.g., fire, chemical spills, natural disasters).
- Organize and conduct emergency drills to test the effectiveness of safety protocols and ensure employees are familiar with emergency procedures.
- Ensure that first aid equipment and emergency supplies are readily available and properly maintained.
- Health and Well-being Initiatives
- Implement and promote employee health and well-being programs, including ergonomics, mental health support, and wellness activities.
- Monitor workplace conditions to ensure they promote a healthy and safe work environment.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of all health and safety activities, including training records, audit reports, and incident investigations.
- Prepare and present health and safety reports to senior management and relevant stakeholders on a regular basis.
- Ensure timely submission of any regulatory reports required by health and safety authorities.
Job Requirements
Key Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in health and safety management, with at least 2 years in a senior or leadership role.
Skills
- In-depth knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, and best practices.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and accident investigations.
- Proficiency in developing and delivering training programs.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills to address safety challenges effectively.
- Ability to influence a culture of safety and compliance across the organization.
Work Environment
- The role may involve working in hazardous environments, requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- The position will require regular site visits, audits, and occasional out-of-hours work in response to emergencies.
