Job Description
DIVISION: Macroeconomic Forecasting and Analysis Division (MFAD)
Job Title: Economist
Report to: Chief Economist through the Senior/Principal Economist
Working hours: Usually 0800hrs to 1600hrs
Job Summary:
The Economist supports Government economic policy and decision-making through macroeconomic, fiscal and sectoral analysis, forecasting, policy research and quantitative modelling. The role contributes to economic forecasts, tax revenue estimates, fiscal projections, policy assessments and key Government reports, while supporting the collection and analysis of economic and financial data.
Main Duties:
- Develop, maintain and improve macroeconomic, fiscal and tax revenue forecasting models.
- Prepare economic forecasts and analyse developments across assigned sectors, revenue streams and policy areas.
- Contribute to tax revenue forecasts, macro-fiscal projections and policy costing for the annual Budget and medium-term fiscal framework.
- Undertake economic research and assess the economic and fiscal impact of Government policies, programmes and reforms.
- Source, compile, validate and analyse economic and financial data and maintain relevant databases and analytical tools.
- Monitor domestic and international economic developments, identify emerging risks and assess their implications for the Seychelles economy.
- Contribute to Government publications and reports, including the Budget Strategy and Outlook, Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, Fiscal Risk Statement and Economic Outlook reports.
- Prepare analytical inputs for Cabinet Memoranda, ministerial briefs, presentations and other policy documents.
- Liaise with Government institutions, public enterprises, regulatory bodies, international financial institutions and other stakeholders to support analytical work.
- Participate in technical meetings, consultations and working groups as required.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Chief Economist or other authorised officers.
Benefits
Salary Band: SB3 – SB7
Job Requirements
Entry Requirements:
Master’s degree (with honours) in Economics, Econometrics, Commerce, Finance, or a related analytical field such as Mathematics, Statistics or the Sciences; or
Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Commerce, Finance, or a related analytical field such as Mathematics, Statistics or the Sciences; or
Advanced Diploma in Business Studies/Administration/Economics/Law/Public Policy or related field plus three (3) years’ working experience as an Assistant Economist or relevant work experience
Other required qualities:
- Sound knowledge of economic principles, public finance, fiscal policy and economic development.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse and interpret economic and financial data.
- Knowledge of economic forecasting, quantitative analysis and statistical concepts.
- Ability to develop and maintain economic and financial models.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other analytical or statistical software.
- Good written and verbal communication, report-writing and presentation skills.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, initiative and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with good interpersonal and stakeholder-engagement skills.
