Job Description

The Fishing Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the fishing operations, ensuring exceptional guest experiences, the safety of guides and guests, and the efficient management of resources.

This role encompasses operational planning, guide management, procurement, sustainability practices, guest engagement, and collaboration with internal departments, including the kitchen, reservations, and hotel management.

The Fishing Manager serves as the primary liaison between fishing operations and other teams, maintaining a seamless, safe, and sustainable fishing program.

Roles and Duties

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Management:
    • Guide Rotation Planning: Develop and manage guide rotation schedules to optimize resource utilization and guest experiences.
    • Bookings & Projections: Oversee fishing bookings and forecast guest participation, coordinating with the reservations team to ensure smooth daily operations.
    • Safety Protocols: Enforce strict safety standards for guides and guests, ensuring full compliance with established protocols.
    • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Coordinate with other departments across the island to deliver seamless operations and exceptional guest experiences.
  • Kitchen Coordination:
    • Communicate weekly with the Head Chef regarding scheduled fishing activities to support menu planning and fish requirements.
    • Ensure the availability of pelagic fish on weekends for fresh sushi and sashimi.
    • Relay dietary restrictions from the fishing team to the kitchen to ensure safe pack lunches for all guides.
    • Provide daily updates on guest and guide numbers to facilitate pack lunch preparation.
    • Ensure the return of all pack lunch boxes from the fishing center to the main kitchen.
  • Guest Experience and Safety:
    • Maintain regular communication with hotel management to align guest expectations, safety measures, and overall satisfaction.
    • Coordinate any specific guest requirements, preferences, or dietary restrictions related to fishing trips.
    • Work with the Head Chef to schedule meals around fishing activities, ensuring meals are timed conveniently for guests.
    • Gather and relay guest feedback regarding meals and overall experience to continuously improve operations.
  • Fishing Equipment and Logistics:
    • Oversee maintenance of fishing equipment, boats, and gear, coordinating with procurement and technical teams.
    • Ensure fishing expedition schedules align with hotel operations and meal services.
    • Communicate fishing team needs that may affect logistics or meal planning.
    • Plan fishing activities efficiently to minimize fuel consumption and operational costs.
  • Sustainability and Conservation Practices:
    • Ensure adherence to sustainable fishing practices, including proper fish handling, catch limits, and ethical release protocols.
    • Monitor guides’ compliance with conservation practices, such as barbless hooks, knotless nets, proper fish handling, and catch record maintenance.
    • Enforce rod limits and seasonal restrictions.
    • Collaborate with Ecology & Sustainability teams on fieldwork and recreational fishery monitoring.
  • Guide Management:
    • Manage guide rotations, leave schedules, and coordination with HR and camp managers.
    • Address disciplinary issues within the guide team following established protocols.
    • Conduct guide interviews, performance evaluations, and conflict resolution.
    • Ensure guides maintain professional appearance, uniform standards, and personal hygiene.
  • Procurement and Resource Management:
    • Coordinate with procurement contacts to ensure timely acquisition of supplies and equipment.
    • Manage equipment maintenance and oversee responsible operational spending.
    • Monitor fuel consumption and implement sustainable practices to reduce costs and environmental impact.
  • Administrative Tasks:
    • Manage administrative responsibilities, including emails, catch reports, booking sheets, and operational documentation.
    • Maintain proficiency in management systems, including tides, Micros, flight planners, shared drives, and booking platforms.
    • Oversee stock control and requisitions in coordination with relevant teams.
  • Safety and Emergency Protocols:
    • Make informed weather-related decisions to ensure the safety of guests and guides.
    • Understand and execute medical emergency procedures and evacuation plans.
    • Promote the company’s conservation ethos in all operations.
  • Guest Experience Oversight:
    • Ensure guest safety and satisfaction during fishing excursions, providing expert guidance and informative commentary.
    • Manage tips distribution fairly among guides and staff.
    • Oversee the fishing center and shop, maintaining a welcoming, organized, and well-stocked environment.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Proven experience in operational management and team leadership, preferably in hospitality, tourism, or fishing operations.
  • Strong understanding of sustainable fishing practices and conservation protocols.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules and operational challenges.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of local fisheries, tides, and wildlife conservation is advantageous
