Post Title: Senior Social Worker
Section: Hospital Health Service
Responsible for: Supervision of assistant social worker and social worker and/or social work student.
Job Description
Job Purpose
Under general supervision, and in addition to performing the full range of operational level duties, officers
- Are assigned responsibility for administering specialized social service programs (such as, a suicide prevention or formal research project);
- Administer with considerable independence an unusually broad variety of therapies on the most difficult cases;
- Are designated experts, consultants, or sources of knowledge for a major area of knowledge within the social work profession
- Supervise the delivery of case interventions by social workers grade II and III
Key Outputs:
- Assigned case work is properly assessed and intervention plans are designed , implemented , reviewed to meet the psychosocial needs of the patients
- Cases are well documented to provide overall summary and diagnoses of the cases
- Group work activities are accurately carried out with patients
- High satisfaction from beneficiaries and stakeholders in the way service gaps are identified and addressed
- Opportunities for the creation or enhancement of community programmes are identified, and successful implemented.
- Useful data is collected to facilitate gap analysis of programmes
- Social workers students, social workers grade II and III are developed professionally through the acquisition of knowledge and skills
Key Functions:
- Co-ordination of social work activities within a hospital covering a number of units
- Planning and leading social work programmes such as counseling, placement, home based care, rehabilitation and follow up of patients
- Work and communicate with complex mental health patients’ requiring complex psychosocial assessment and support to assist their transfer back to the community with appropriate supports in place.
- Provide direct assistance to patients, carers and families
- Work collaboratively with other community agencies by initiating , designing, developing and implementing new community and development initiatives
- Work effectively as part of a team, to meet program goals and objectives
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of a positive and safe experience to at-risk patients
- Contribute in research activities with clinicians and other professionals within the hospital /other agencies
- Support the development and supervision of unqualified staff and students.
- Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Person Specifications
Qualification
- At least a Bachelors Degree in any of the following disciplines: Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Mental Health or its equivalent qualification from a recognized University.
Experience
- Served in the grade of Medical Social Worker II or in a comparable and relevant position in the Public Service for a minimum period of three (3) years;
And
- Shown merit and ability in work performance and results
