Job Description

Job Purpose

To operate, monitor and maintain the sewerage treatment plant (STP) and associated equipment to ensure that wastewater is treated efficiently, safely and that the quality of treated effluent complies with operational and environmental requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor all STP processes and associated equipment in accordance with established operating procedures.
• Monitor incoming sewage flow, wastewater levels and the performance of the treatment process.
• Operate and monitor screening, degritting and preliminary treatment equipment.
• Ensure that pumps, mixers, blowers, aeration systems and other mechanical equipment are operating correctly.
• Monitor the aeration in biological treatment tanks to maintain appropriate treatment conditions.
• Monitor and maintain mixers in anoxic and aerobic compartments.
• Monitor and optimize return activated sludge (RAS) and internal recycle flows.
• Monitor sludge levels in clarifiers and ensure proper sludge withdrawal and recycling.
• Monitor and control scum accumulation in primary and secondary settling tanks.
• Monitor the operation of sludge thickening, dewatering and handling systems.
• Operate and monitor sludge dewatering equipment.
• Prepare and adjust chemical dosing systems, including lime, ferric chloride and other treatment chemicals, as required.
• Monitor chemical storage levels and report shortages or abnormal consumption.
• Operate and monitor UV disinfection systems and ensure effective disinfection of treated effluent.
• Collect wastewater, sludge and treated effluent samples in accordance with the required sampling programme.
• Carry out basic field tests and record test results accurately.
• Monitor key operating parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, flow, levels, turbidity and other relevant process parameters.
• Identify abnormal operating conditions, equipment faults, alarms, leaks, odors or unusual process conditions and report them promptly.
• Carry out routine inspection, cleaning and basic preventive maintenance of STP equipment.
• Keep screens, channels, tanks, equipment and operational areas clean and in good working condition.
• Assist maintenance personnel and contractors during repair, servicing and installation works.
• Ensure that all equipment is operated within its designated operating limits.
• Maintain accurate daily operational records, logbooks, checklists and computer-based records.
• Record plant flows, equipment operating hours, chemical consumption, sludge production and other relevant operational data.
• Monitor and report any abnormal discharge or condition that may affect the quality of the final effluent.
• Assist in responding to equipment failures, power interruptions, high-flow events and other operational emergencies.
• Ensure proper housekeeping and cleanliness throughout the STP.
• Handle chemicals, sludge and wastewater in accordance with approved health, safety and environmental procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Follow confined-space, chemical handling, electrical and other applicable safety procedures.
• Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses and environmental concerns to the supervisor.
• Assist with optimization of the treatment process to improve plant performance and reduce energy and chemical consumption.
• Participate in routine inspections and performance monitoring of the STP.
• Assist with commissioning and testing of new equipment and process systems when required.

Job Requirements

Qualification and Experience

• Minimum S5 level of education, with the ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
• Basic understanding of wastewater treatment processes would be an advantage.
• Previous experience in sewage/wastewater treatment, pump stations, industrial plants or a similar operational environment would be an advantage.
• Ability to understand operating procedures, work instructions, safety procedures and plant process diagrams.
• Basic computer literacy and ability to enter and retrieve operational data.
• Ability to work shifts, weekends and public holidays as required.
• Physically fit and able to work in a wastewater treatment environment.

Knowledge and Skills

The operator should have basic knowledge of:

• Sewage treatment processes.
• Biological treatment and activated sludge processes.
• Pumps, blowers, mixers and mechanical equipment.
• Sludge handling and dewatering.
• Chemical dosing systems.
• UV disinfection.
• Basic wastewater sampling and testing.
• Plant instrumentation and alarms.
• Occupational health and safety requirements.
• Environmental protection and pollution prevention.
• Basic troubleshooting and identification of equipment/process abnormalities.
